School Poems to eBooks
63Reading my first eBook
Hidden treasure
I was going through my old school stuff and came across some work I had put away because of how proud I was of it at the time. I showed it to my father who suggested I share it on HubPages. I was in Year 7 and about twelve years old when I wrote My Magic Box. It was an assignment set by my English teacher. He read a poem called My Magic Box by Kit Wright to the class and asked us to write a poem about all the precious things we would put in our own magic boxes.
My Magic Box
In my box I will put
The first smile of a baby
A day that never dies
The first snowflake of winter
Alexander the Great’s sword
The heartbeat of the world
My first kiss
In my box you will also find
The ring from Mount Doom
A white feather from an angel’s wing
The words from Muhammad Ali’s lips
The roar of a tsunami
My dreams and achievements
And my family’s laughter
My box is made from
A deep mahogany, which is covered with golden sand from the Gobi desert
It is also covered with ice, fire and lava
The hinges are made from volcanic rock
It roars with emotion
Now I will relax in my box of dreams,
Travel round the world and go back in time to visit the ancient Egyptians and find out their great secrets of the world
Writing this poem was my first experience of delving into another world, a world of fantasy and magic where I could say how I felt without being too obvious. The assignment made me think about all the things I could be grateful for in my life and I suppose made me realise what were the important things in my life. I like that twelve year old boy and I am proud of the choices he made then. Those choices he made have made me the man I am today!

Your teacher did a a wonderful job in inspiring you to continue writing. I really like this article and I checked out the product by Jim Edwards and Joe Vitale you recommended. It is a genuinely good product produced by people who know what they are talking about. I had been thinking about writing an ebook but did not know how to get started. Now I do thanks to you!

Very beautiful, Jake. I particularly like the way you describe your magic box.. the richness of mahogany, the extremes of ice, fire and lava, the solidity of volcanic rock and then the passion that 'roars with emotion'. I wonder what that box really stands for? Perhaps the energy and power that drives your life or the vastness of the resources within you from which you will craft your dreams? Whatever it may be, even at twelve you recognized something far greater than you could see with your eyes or touch with your hands. A magnificent insight.
